Personal vs. Commercial Use

As designers, you see the words "personal use" and commercial use" on design especially free ones you can download. Some really do not know the meaning of these which will cause issues latter down the road pertaining to copyright. Being a design means you can find inspiration anywhere and create works of art out of found objects (or designs). Everyone has downloaded fonts and templates before especially starting out and as a freelancer. Pretty much all the download will have an about section and the usage. The usage usually says "personal use" or commercial use", sometimes both.

If you use a design for "personal use", it is meant for:

  • Personal websites
  • Non-profit organizations
  • Home computer use
  • Anything that does not involve cash income.
If you use a design for "commercial use", it is meant for:
  • Selling
  • Use to make commercial graphic designs
  • Use on commercial websites
  • Anything that involves cash income.
"Commercial use" designs are usually paid for or by donation. If you are looking for a free font or template, it is best to look for the words "commercial use" because you won't be hit with any copyright issues later. Some copyrights will have additional info like "You cannot however redistribute, resell, lease, license, sub-license or offer our resources to any third party." This pretty much means, if you download a template or font from a site, you can not resell the same design as is.

I hope this helps.
